You're in luck. Here, in Guadalajara, we have just the place for you and your family: the Jardin Zoologico. Your children can admire a lot of local animals and aviaries. What's interesting is that inside the zoo there is an amusement park (Selva Magica), where a dolphin and a seal have peformances 3 or 4 times a day.
The zoo is quite large and well attended.
You can get there by bus number 600, 60 and 62, which are going north on Independencia. A ticket will cost you 0.50$.
Or, if you prefer it, the Planetarium is in the same area.
